North America’s leading production facilities provider

Dome Productions is one of North America’s leading production facilities providers, offering mobile production facilities, transmission services, studio facilities and full turnkey host broadcast services.

Dome has worked with all major broadcasters, leagues, teams, rights-holders, production companies, government parties and other content creators. Dome has provided Host Broadcast production, engineering and transmission services to OBS, HBS, and many other international and domestic rights-holders and broadcasters on major international sporting events, and to the Government of Canada on many high profile Government events with international stature.

Dome Productions was formed in 1989, with the opening of the then named SkyDome, as the production and post-production arm of the John Labatt Limited Broadcast Group. Primarily focused on providing live event facilities using its two in-house control rooms for baseball, football and any other events in the stadium, Dome Productions also provided post-production facilities for movies, episodic productions and commercials. With the purchase of two mobile units in 1992, Dome Productions progressed into the mobile production business. The goal was to expand the live event services being provided to its sister companies at the SkyDome to the myriad of events they were doing on the road.

In 1994, the most significant part of TSN Enterprises -Distribution Services- was transferred to Dome Productions. As part of TSN Enterprises, Distribution’s original mandate was to reduce TSN’s ever-increasing backhaul costs by purchasing satellite time in bulk and reselling any excess to third parties. As time went on the business continued to grow, supporting the ever increasing requirements of TSN and RDS, as well as a host of third-party customers including the Ontario Jockey Club, Cancom and CTV among others. As the customer base services and profits continued to grow, the business evolved beyond satellite to fibre optic transport.

In 1995, Labatt’s was forced to sell its broadcast division as a result of its purchase by Interbrew, a large European beer company. NetStar Communications, the new owners of the broadcast assets, continued to support the growth of Dome through the acquisition of three mobiles in 1996 and 1997. In 1999, Dome’s first digital mobile was built and engineered from the ground up. As well, CTV purchased NetStar.

In 2004, Dome Productions experienced many milestones which is why it could be considered the most significant year in Dome’s history. Rogers purchased 50% of the newly formed Dome Productions Partnership and our first High Definition mobile was launched in March and was awarded the 2004 Gemini Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement. With the unwavering support of both partners, Dome continued to launch HD mobiles, approximately one per year for the next six years. With the launch of Dome’s own full-period fibre network at our facilities at Rogers Centre in 2009/10, Dome established a state of the art network control centre at Rogers Centre that houses multiple carriers for interconnectivity and delivery worldwide.

On January 20th, 2016, Dome became the first North American mobile truck vendor to launch a native 4K truck. Dome has facilitated live 4K broadcasts for TSN, Rogers Sportsnet and CTV, Woodbine Entertainment and DirecTV, putting Canada, and Dome, in the position of North American leader.

While keeping pace with the ever-changing mobile production solutions, Dome continues to innovate within the transmission world through new service offerings and strategic partnerships. As one of North America’s largest distribution providers, Dome offers full turnkey International transmission services over a number of different platforms, including a state-of-the-art Cross-Canada GigE fiber network that also extends into New York. Dome has an established network Control Centre in Toronto that houses multiple carriers, including Level 3, The Switch, AT&T, GTT Hibernia, and LTN for interconnection and delivery worldwide. Dome Productions also provides satellite services, uplinking, HD Encoding, MPEG and JPEG compression, frame-rate and standards conversion, and internet distribution for all configurations to all platforms.

Through these remarkable technical milestones, and their successful 4K launch Dome continues to enhance and further earn the company an international reputation for excellence in leading-edge solutions, engineering and technical expertise and commitment to customer service.
